雖然之前在任天堂主機帕布雷斯特就已經發行了GB的【超級機器人大戰】與FC的【第2次超級機器人大戰】，然而一直要到超任版的【第3次超級機器人大戰】，才算是真正的變成實質上的大作。
【第3次】的設計算是訂立了整個機器人大戰系列的公式，往後的續作都是在這個基礎上頭加強的。
此款遊戲的經典程度，使它直到今天仍舊都是老玩家們持續遊玩與討論的作品之一
